Advanced Recreational Trimix

The IANTD Advanced Recreational course is designed to extend the diver’s knowledge in the use of Nirtox or EANx and introduce the concepts of Trimix

Course Content

Similar to the advanced nitrox course, the advanced recreational Trimix course is typically run over four days, two days of theory and two days of diving. The first day covers all the required theory for the course, with the second day containing workshops. Once again, these workshops allow you hands on experience with various bits of equipment, included a multitude of dive planning software. There is also a multiple choice exam to complete in your own time. Trimix has been the sole province of technical divers. this course is designed to bring the many advantages of Trimix (mainly the low narcotic potential) to less qualified divers who wish to explore depths down to 45m.

Theory Covered Includes

  • Advantages of Trimix
  • Equipment considerations
  • Gas use and buoyancy
  • Oxygen Theory
  • Inert Gas Narcosis
  • CO2 retention
  • DCS review
  • Dive Planning Equations
  • Accident Management Review
  • Dive Planning Considerations
  • Dive Planning Workshops
  • Equipment Workshops
  • Question and Answer Sessions

Practical Aspects Covered Includes

  • A minimum of four dives with atleast 120 minutes of bottom time, completed on recreational Trimix, with a >50% Nitrox
decompression mix used on all dives
  • Gas Analysis considerations
  • Correct use of reels and DSMBs
  • Introduction to multiple level decompression stops
  • Introduction of a number of essential new diving skills

Prerequisites

Course is open to all divers over the age of 18 (15 with parent or guardian approval) qualified a Basic Nitrox Diver and Deep Diver with proof of a minimum of 25 logged dives or sufficient experience to satisfy the instructor that the student has the ability and knowledge to continue into this level of training.

Equipment Requirements

Basic scuba equipment is required along with

  • A nitrox twin set of minimum 2 x 10ltrs
  • A decompression stage cylinder and regulator (7ltr can be provided)
  • Reel and DSMB
  • Slate

Qualification

Upon completion of the course and passing of the written exam, the IANTD Advanced Recreational Trimix card will be issued. This qualifies the diver to use mixes of 21% to a maximum of 40% oxygen combined with a percentage of helium to provide an END of no greater than 24m for bottom mix and any nitrox mix upto an oxygen partial pressure of 1.5 for decompression, to a depth of 45msw with limited decompression
